To Call Your U.S. Representative (Congressperson)
- If your U.S. Representative is a single-payer supporter (as determined above), give them a one-time thank-you call.
- Call and ask to be connected to (name).
- Communicate to whoever answers the phone that you would like to give them your name and tell them your position on an issue.
- Give them your name and telephone number and/or zip code, which help them confirm you live in the district.
- Tell them that you would like Representative ______ to become a cosponsor of House Resolution 676. (Say the “676” clearly to help ensure that they record it accurately).
- If you don’t want or need a return letter for this contact, then try to avoid giving them your full postal address. Instead, tell the person that no reply is necessary to this contact and that you want to simply communicate your support for H.R. 676. Short calls of giving inputs happen a fair amount of time at these offices, so it should be no problem.
To Also Call Your U.S. Senators
- Use the above instructions with this modification to the message that you give to the person who answers the phone:
- Tell them that you would like Senator ______ to be a supporter of a Senate equivalent to House Resolution 676.
To Also Call U.S. Presidential Candidates
Republican John McCain – 703-418-2008
Democrat Barack Obama – 866-675-2008
The following single-payer supporters only need to receive a one-time thank-you call:
Green Party: Cynthia McKinney – 202-319-7191 or 202-319-7192
Independent: Ralph Nader – 202-471-5833
Socialist: Brian Moore – 352-686-9936
- Communicating at a U.S. Presidential campaign office:
- Tell whoever answers the phone that you would like to give them your name and to tell them your position on an issue.
- When the person is ready to record your input:
- Give them your name, city and state.
- Tell them that you would like ________ to be a supporter of single-payer national health insurance.
- Legal Requirement: Do NOT mention H.R. 676 to a campaign office. It is illegal for campaign workers to discuss or otherwise deal with specific legislation, at least not for a candidate who is currently in office. Do not immediately volunteer your name or other information, because they may not have the time or interest in recording it for this type of call.
