Find Your U.S. Congressional District Number
and the Name of Your U.S. Representative

  1. Determine your 9-digit zip code (ZIP+4), if you do not have it available.
    • Go to http://zip4.usps.com/zip4/welcome.jsp
    • Reason: You may need to know your “ZIP+4” rather than the 5-digit ZIP code, because some Congressional districts cover more than one 5-digit zip code.
  2. Determine your U.S. Congressional District number either by a phone call or on-line access:

    • Call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 1-202-224-3121, or 1-202-225-3121, — or call toll-free with one of the temporary numbers — and ask them for help in determining your U.S. Congressional District number. Depending on your district, they might require you to tell them your 9-digit (ZIP+4) zip code.
      • The hours of the switchboard: 24 hours per day every day of the year.
      • Calling the switchboard at an after-hours will work fine for most people. However, the after-hours operator (other than Mon.-Fri. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) can only do a look-up for a 5-digit zip code (This is the status as of January 2008).
    • — OR — go to http://www.house.gov/. At the upper left area of the screen enter your 9-digit (ZIP+4) zip code. Click on “Go.” You will get to a web page that says “Find Your Representative.”
      • The name of your U.S. Representative and the number of your U.S. Congressional District will be displayed there.
  3. Write down the district number and click here to return to the previous page, such as continuing the steps for getting addresses for your note.
